Diabetes 'can be deferred or prevented'

As we all know, Diabetes is one of the most widespread diseases of the moment, a metabolism disorder that has grown to reflect some of the deepest vices of modern lifestyle. Type two diabetes, which accounts for the vast majority (about 90%) of all diabetes cases, is closely linked with obesity and physical inactivity.

Considering these circumstances, it’s not surprising that diabetes is a primary target for widespread global research into whether a change of lifestyle can actually delay or even prevent its development. A recent such study took place in China and showed that a sensible diet and regular exercise reduced the incidence of diabetes by an impressive 43% over 20 years in the 577 adults who participated in the research. The study has shown that group-based interventions targeting lifestyle changes such as diet and exercise produce a durable and long-lasting reduction in incidence of type 2 diabetes.

What is Theory of Theism

Professor Richard Swinburne formulates theism as a theory to explain facts. This sharply contrasts with the view that theology deals with revealed truths. This fact alone deserves respect and interest. Theism can now be examined as a theory. It wouldn't make sense to evaluate revealed truth. There is no other theory available to compare with evolution theory. This book is an answer to Richard Dawkins's The Blind Watchmaker and Stephen Hawking's A Brief History of Time. It also shows that it is possible for a theist to accept evolution and Darwinism.

Swinburne gave a clear, modern and general account of theism, accessible to a wider public. Professor Richard Swinburne is one of the most influential theistic philosophers of our time and is Nolloth Professor of the Philosophy of the Christian Religion at the University of Oxford.

Getting away from Diabetes

Bump up your magnesium, Eating a diet rich in this mineral significantly cuts your chances of developing type 2 diabetes, report Swedish researchers. Only about half of people get the recommended daily 320 to 420 milligrams of magnesium, but it’s easy to up your intake: 2/3 cup spinach, about 30 almonds, or peanut butter sandwich on whole wheat each delivers about 100 milligrams of the mineral, enough to lower diabetes risk by 15 percent, say the scientist.

Go easy on selenium, Early research hinted that extra doses of this mineral might be protective, but the latest study found that selenium supplements (200 micrograms a day) not only failed to fend off diabetes, but, over time, might actually increase your risk of the disease.

Is Computer Dangerous for our Health?

Nowadays life is made of web chatting, navigation, PC games and the list is endless. Some spend hours and even days without moving from the front of the computer; shower and food are skipped and only physiological needs force them for a few seconds out. But do you think that so much staring at a computer screen does not affect you? Here is just a part of the effect: the “computer vision syndrome” comprising tired dry eyes, blurred vision, eye strain, headache, and sensitivity to light.

A recent survey made by American Optometric Association, on about 1,000 persons older than 18, revealed that 82% used frequently the PC; 42% spent over three hours daily in front of a computer screen; 73% did not take computer breaks as often as recommended; 10% did not take breaks at all.

Protective measures

“First, get your eyes checked regularly and work with your doctor of optometry to solve these problems. The doctor who knows you are using a computer for an extended period of time will do things differently for you then they might otherwise do. Special computer glasses and computer screen filters are available to help reduce glare and eye discomfort,” said Daum.Don’t forget to blink.

things you need to know about acne

Basically, acne is a skin disorder that leads to an outbreak of lesions called pimples or “zits.” The most common form of the disease is called acne vulgaris—the rash that affects many adolescents. Acne vulgaris is triggered by the hormonal changes that occur in puberty. This is a condition in which pimples appear on the face, chest, and back. In teenagers, acne usually appears on the forehead, nose, and chin. It is caused by the overproduction of sebum. Sebum is an oily substance that forms in glands just under the surface of the skin called sebaceous glands.

During puberty, there are increased levels of the male hormone androgen. High levels of androgen cause excess sebum to form. Sometimes the sebum combines with dead, sticky skin cells and bacteria called Propioni-bacterium acnes that normally live on the skin. The mixture of oil and cells allows the bacteria to grow in the plugged follicles. This will now be the formation of the blackheads or whiteheads. Acne treatments should be consider if there is this painful nodules and cysts are present, acne lesions are causing scarring and over-the-counter medications have not been effective.

recipe for happy marriage

Finding the “recipe” for love and at the same time for a happy marriage is what researchers have been busily working on these days. In their never-ending quest, they have managed not only to prove that true love does indeed last forever, but just recently, that it also takes more than just love to make a marriage work.

Surprisingly, at the end of the study they learned that love was not the only thing that mattered when it came to making marriage work. Things like, whether the two had lived together before their “I Do’s,” whether they smoked, age and pay gaps also weighed heavily in the balance. Not even love was strong enough to overcome age barriers, despite whatever we might have heard on the topic before. Thus, a husband who is nine or more years his wife’s senior has twice as many chances of asking for a divorce than men in relationships with women their age. The same percentage goes for men who marry before they’re 25.

Wanting to have children is also extremely important for marital bliss, especially if both partners do not wish to become parents to the same extent. For instance, the research has found that women who want children more than their spouses are more likely to ask for divorce later on. Partners with children from a previous relationship or couples who become parents before marriage are also doomed for a separation, the study has also found.

Britney Spears Steps Out Amidst Cheating Rumors

Britney Spears’ life has long become tabloid fodder and nothing she does at this point can change that. Following reports of another breakdown in Disneyland and rumors that her manager and boyfriend Jason Trawick has been cheating on her ever since the beginning of their relationship. The two put a united front over the weekend on a public outing.

Although Brit and Jason were holding hands, the expression on her face spoke volumes, the Daily Mail says. The pop star seemed very exhausted and, above all, incredibly upset which, as expected, has made way for speculation of just how happy she is in her current relationship. Judging by the most recent photos, it could very well be that her romance to Jason is nearing the end.

“Britney Spears has come a long way since her darkest days. The once troubled pop star has got her life back on track, with regular access to her children, a successful tour under her belt and a loving and stable relationship. But it seems that something may be worrying Britney. She looked anxious and preoccupied as her boyfriend of two years drove her to the mall yesterday. The blonde star kept her arms protectively around her body as Jason Trawick helped her out of the vehicle, almost cowering behind him as they walked hand-in-hand inside,” the Mail says.

million lost Frank Skinner reveal

Comedian Frank Skinner has said he lost millions of pounds as a result of the economic downturn. Skinner said he had become a "victim of the credit crunch" after investing in the American International Group (AIG), which nearly went bust two years ago.

The loss of "a few million" forced Skinner to take stock of his life. But he said there had been a positive side to his experience: "It also gave me my hunger back, I think. If anything put the mojo back in me it was the idea that I might not have money left. I'm not a very extravagant man really - as long as I have got a season ticket for West Bromwich Albion. I drive a very run-of-the-mill car, I do live in a posh flat, I must admit - I like a nice view."

He said he did not spend much on clothes but that he had bought one of Elvis Presley's shirts for £11,000. "Elvis Presley has kind of been my hero for as long as I can remember," he said.

He said that, like many other young boys, he had wanted to be a footballer but that he had been "awful" at the game. His Three Lions hit song during the 1996 European Championship was "as close as I was ever going to get to be part of an England World Cup squad - to have the official song", he said.

Yahoo and Facebook tie-up?

According to the recent news from BBC World, Yahoo and Facebook are to tie their services closer together. The tie-up means people with a presence on both sites can have updates to one service mirrored to the other. It also means that it will get easier for users of Yahoo's other services, such as Flickr, to share what they do with friends on Facebook.

Alongside the Facebook deal goes an overhaul of Yahoo's Profile service to make it easier for people to control what they share. The deal means that people who maintain profiles on Yahoo and Facebook can link the two pages and cross-pollinate both with one update. It will also mean that those who use Flickr, Yahoo Answers or the social site's video and music services can pipe any media or data they create to friends who use only Facebook.

The account linking deal deepens the relationship that Facebook and Yahoo struck in 2009. That made it easier for people to build a contacts book that spanned both services. The refresh of Profile will see it re-named Yahoo Pulse. It will also get improved privacy controls so users can fine tune who gets to see their updates or view the media they put on the web.

Reality on Smokers Relaxation Ruse

Smoking helps relaxation. Most smokers claim it helps them relax. But would you ever describe a smoker as relaxed? Their addiction (or habit) makes them nervous and jumpy. All things equal, a smoker will never relax as they once did before their drug.

Think about last time you ate in a restaurant. Isn't that a relaxing environment when you're eating your meal, in good company ? But that's not enough for the smoker. They're still not relaxed. They need a cigarette fix, even between courses, because they think that's what they need to relax.

Then they associate a temporary relaxation with the cigarette, rather than the environment and company. They don't even consider their non-smoker friends enjoyment might get ruined by smoking.

Let's look at the realities of the relaxation ruse. Nicotine is a stimulant, not a relaxant/depressant. A stimulant speeds up metabolism, not slows it down.

pregnant or fat woman issue

Perhaps, you’re one of those commuters who don't give up your seat for pregnant women because you fear offending someone who is just overweight. It's a minefield of mixed signals, indecision, guilt and offence. All played out painfully in public on a crowded bus or train. Some people are just selfish, yes, but the average commuter would probably give up his or her seat for a pregnant woman, with good grace. It's just not that straightforward.

For a start, he might not have noticed her, and is instead lost in a book or World Cup supplement. Few people repeatedly scan for those more in need of a seat at every stop. And where does his area of responsibility end - shouting distance? Then there's that nagging doubt - is she pregnant, fat, or just wearing a baggy top?

Whatever the discomfort of offending a pregnant woman by staying seated, is it preferable to the excruciating awkwardness of effectively telling a woman, within earshot of about 20 people, that her tummy is so inflated it looks as if there's a baby inside?

South Korea's first space rocket ready for launch

According to the latest news, South Korea is set to loft a satellite into space for the first time, after an attempt last year failed. Ground controllers plan to launch the Korea Space Launch Vehicle 1 (KSLV-1) on Wednesday between 1630 and 1840 from the Naro Space Center in Goheung.

The launch will up the ante in what some observers have described as an "Asian space race". China, India and Japan have developed a launch capability; China has also sent three manned missions into space. Officials have decided to go ahead with the launch after fixing an electrical problem picked up during launch preparations.

The part-Russian, part South Korean rocket will launch a 91kg (200lb) test satellite called the Science and Technology Satellite 2B (STSAT 2B). The rocket stands 33m (108ft) tall and will be launched from the country's new spaceport on the southern tip of the Korean peninsula.

South Korea's first launch of the two-stage KSLV-1, in August last year, failed to place its satellite payload into the proper orbit. Four months previously, an attempted space launch by North Korea was deemed to have failed when the US reported that both rocket stages had fallen into the Pacific Ocean.

Dubai World agrees debt-restructuring

According to recent news, Dubai World, the state-owned investment vehicle, says it has reached an agreement "in principle" with most of its bank lenders to restructure debt worth $23.5bn. This would be left with debts of $14.4bn after the restructuring. But the deal must still be approved by other banks that were not involved in the negotiations.

Dubai World stunned global markets in November last year when it asked for a six-month delay on debt repayments. The terms of the restructuring include converting $8.9bn of government debt into equity. The government of Dubai and Dubai World had tabled this offer to a committee representing its bank lenders in March after three months of negotiations.

Aidan Birkett, chief restructuring officer of Dubai World said that "We are pleased that we have received unanimous support in principle... on the headline economic terms to our restructuring proposal. This is an important milestone and reflects our efforts to achieve the best possible solution for all stakeholders. The proposal puts the company on a sound financial footing and reflects the continued support of the government of Dubai and its lenders."

desk jobs have higher risk of prostate cancer

According to the research, men who have desk jobs are more likely to develop prostate cancer. They found those who spend most of their working lives sitting down are almost 30 percent more likely to be diagnosed with the disease than those with very active jobs.

Analysis of 45,000 men aged 45 to 79 found those who had highly physical jobs were 28 percent less likely to develop the disease than those who spent most of their working lives sitting. In turn, those who sat for half of their working day had a 20 percent lower risk than men who spent their entire day sitting, the British Journal of Cancer reports.

Findings from this study show that not sitting for most of the time during work or occupational activity and longer daily durations of the main component of active living (walking or cycling) may be associated with reduced prostate cancer incidence.

Myths of Coffee

Various people say their brain doesn't start working properly in the morning until they have had a cup of coffee. But the stimulating effect for which caffeine is famous may be an illusion, say researchers. Those who drink a lot of coffee may feel more alert after their first cup of the day. But this is probably because it reverses the fatiguing effects of overnight caffeine withdrawal.

The study suggested that coffee drinkers may actually be better off without their habitual morning mug as it raises the risk of anxiety and high blood pressure. With 379 people who abstained from caffeine for 16 hours before drinking either caffeine or a placebo (dummy drink) were tested for a range of responses afterwards.

Peter Rogers, from the university's department of experimental psychology and one of the lead authors of the study, said: 'Our study shows that we don't gain an advantage from consuming caffeine - although we feel alerted by it, this is caffeine just bringing us back to normal. On the other hand, while caffeine can increase anxiety, tolerance means that for most caffeine consumers this effect is negligible.
